Tullamore Main Drainage Scheme
T J O’Connor & Associates were engaged by Offaly County Council to design and tender works to complete parts of the foul and combined drainage systems in the western part of Tullamore. The works involved the construction of large diameter sewers and other pipelines on the main Tullamore-Athlone Road, under the main Dublin-Sligo railway and also under the bed of the Grand Canal.
Sewer sizes ranged from 450mm to 1,800mm in diameter. The work included the construction of a 400mm diameter ductile iron water main and the provision of telecom and ESB ducts under the railway and canal. The works were facilitated by wayleaves from both Waterways Ireland and Iarnród Eireann and as such were required to observe strict terms associated with the maintenance of flow in the canal, a short (3 month) winter construction window for closure of the canal and stringent health & safety and insurance requirements.
Other aspects of the works included the presence of very strong limestone rock at shallow depths, groundwater handling associated with work below the water table, placement of puddle clay and liners for reinstatement of the canal to Waterways Ireland requirements, road reinstatement, both temporary and permanent, of the Rahan (Athlone) road.
